Questions About Thatching in Boise

Can't find your answer? Call (208) 996-3302.

What is thatch and why is it a problem?

Thatch is a layer of dead grass stems, roots, and debris that builds up between the green grass and the soil surface. When it exceeds ½ inch, it blocks water, fertilizer, and air from reaching the root zone — essentially suffocating your lawn.

How do I know if my lawn needs dethatching?

Push your finger into the lawn. If you feel a spongy layer before hitting soil, you have thatch. If it's more than ½ inch thick, it's time to dethatch. Other signs: water pooling, brown patches despite watering, and fertilizer that doesn't seem to work.

When is the best time to dethatch in Idaho?

Early spring (March–April) when the grass is just starting to grow. This gives the lawn the entire growing season to recover. Fall (September) is the second-best window.

Should I aerate and dethatch at the same time?

Yes — they complement each other perfectly. Dethatch first to remove the barrier, then aerate to break through compaction. Add overseeding and you've got our Yard Revitalization Program, which saves you 10%.

Will dethatching damage my lawn?

Your lawn will look rough for 1-2 weeks after dethatching. That's normal. The exposed soil allows dramatically better water and nutrient penetration, and the lawn comes back thicker and healthier than before.
