What is thatch and why is it a problem?
Thatch is a layer of dead grass stems, roots, and debris that builds up between the green grass and the soil surface. When it exceeds ½ inch, it blocks water, fertilizer, and air from reaching the root zone — essentially suffocating your lawn.
How do I know if my lawn needs dethatching?
Push your finger into the lawn. If you feel a spongy layer before hitting soil, you have thatch. If it's more than ½ inch thick, it's time to dethatch. Other signs: water pooling, brown patches despite watering, and fertilizer that doesn't seem to work.
